Firefighter Glass was caught under a falling wall and staircase at the Kriesle building fire on Congress Avenue at 4th Street. Firefighter Glass died of his injuries on August 17, 1917.
Firefighter Glass wore badge number 13, which was forever retired as a fire department number in his honor. Because of this action, there is no Fire Station 13 still to this day. The Kriesle building was saved and still stands today.
