On November 9, 1877, a night alarm sounded for a fire in a two-story building adjoining the main building of the Blind Asylum.

W.A. Archer, of Hook and Ladder Number 1 was injured by a falling hook. W.H. Salge was thrown off of horse and badly hurt. Foreman E.T. Deats and F.M. Kane, of Colorado Number 2 were caught under a falling wall. Kain recovered, but Foreman Deats died of his injuries on January 20, 1878.
